Correction about death

of Dennis Avera Jr.

Denise Avera, the sister of the late Dennis Avera Jr., former owner of Sapelo All Insurance, notified The Darien News on Thursday, April 13, that her brother did not commit suicide, but died on Oct. 13, 2013 from complications from hernia surgery. When he died, she said, “He had been in intensive care for six weeks, fighting for his life.”

Avera Jr. was arrested in 2013 on charges of worker’s comp insurance fraud. The sister said no court date had been set at the time of his death.

Avera Jr.’s son, Dennis Avera III, was arrested on April 4, 2017 on three counts of insurance fraud, as well as charges on possession of methamphetamine, and illegal possession of three prescription drugs, felonies. He was also charged with two misdemeanors, including possession of dangerous drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia.

She also stated, “I would be careful about what you print about my family in the newspaper.”
