He is survived by his wife, Joan Workman Stelle; and his three children, Brooke Stelle Russo, Lyn Stelle Kendall and Edward Stelle Jr.; 10 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 8, at Chapman Funeral Chapel.

After graduating with a degree in urban planning from Michigan State University in 1964, he and his family moved to Valdosta where he worked for the Area Planning Commission. During the late 1960s and 1970s, he held several management positions in Brunswick and Alma, including positions with the Coastal Area Planning Commission and Model for Rural America.

While living in the Golden Isles, Mr. Stelle was responsible for working with both urban planning and economic development planning. In Glynn County, he was responsible for writing a grant application for the construction of the Colonels Island Railroad, which allowed the expansion of the Brunswick Port. In Alma, Bacon County, he was one of four who organized the first Georgia Blueberry Cooperative, which introduced the Tifton-University of Georgia developed Georgia Highbush Blueberry as a commercial agricultural crop, now the largest in the state. In 1972, Mr. Stelle accepted the position of director of Brunswick-Glynn County Joint Planning Commission, responsible for all development activities in Brunswick and Glynn County. He held the position until 1980, when he became assistant to the administrator and community development director, a position he held until his retirement in 1993.

After retiring to North McIntosh County in 2000, he took time to enjoy crabbing, fishing and reading.

In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that memorials be made to Hospice of the Golden Isles.

Chapman Funeral Chapel & Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
